Internet Crime is a multi billion dollar problem and is becoming an increasing concern. A major concern with internet crime is Cyber crime. Cyber crime is where illegal activities are committed on the internet, (Computer Crime Research Centre, 2007).
Professionals involved in cybercrime are so called cracker’s, who cause deliberate attacks on computers and the internet. One of the reasons why cracker’s and criminals try to get away with their illegal behaviour is because the internet allows users to remain anonymous.
Cyber crime is divided into three main categories. Number one is Cyber crime against the user, this includes broadcasting child pornography and also harassment towards the internet user. Number two is cyber crime against property, this covers computer vandalism and transmission of harmful programmes. Finally, number three is cyber crime against the government, which becomes cyber terrorism once the criminal hack’s into government or military maintained websites, this is an alarming and compromising concern for government organisations. Therefore users need to be extremely careful and not disclose personal information or access bank accounts on the internet.
If a user detects their computers are being hacked, notifying the police who investigate cyber crimes which will be more successful then the user trying to fix the problem themselves (Computer Crime Research Centre, 2007).
